Generally speaking I agree with you on the manual start-up but at this point
I would like to go ahead with a joke to you and ask if practically you don't 
consider your production
start-up script something bulletproof?  :)

It depends a lot which kind of applications you have in production eg. with
a rich backends or data intensive web apps you maybe mean? I tend to think that
if you live mainly on streaming frontends with few open file handles but with
memory licks in place the team can stick on the beer and the infrastructure 
fit.. :)
