That was wonderfully polite, patient, and detailed, and I probably
deserve the parts where I got scolded for too-casual summaries and
snarky descriptions. :-)
And yes, it's clearly misleading to describe the fallback to
effectively -l as a default, too much information (in the sense of
obscuring more important things) to describe the process that leads to
outputting sanitized file content, and not a corner case worth further
description (imo, which has already been demonstrated to be
underinformed, but I'm persuaded by your description).
