After your email I gave spotifyd and spotify-qt a try, and was unsuccesful in getting sound, too. But I noticed that spotify-qt told spotifyd to be unsupported, so I headed to librespot, which finally gave me sound. All from their latest github releases and on an LFS based system, though, but I hope this might be useful for you. Florian.
