Well the kernel relink should fail gracefully now. You should
see an error message on the console indicating to check logs.

AFAIK the installer extracts a tarball to /usr so... maybe?

Either way a /usr partition of 1.9G is perilously small IMO and
you are asking for trouble with that. My recommendation would be
to repartition the disk if you can, before upgrading further.

The smallest installation of /usr I have is 1.7G used and that is
with all other typical partitions under /usr allocated otherwise.
