This is a usb-to-serial converter, should normally work out of the box.  I successfully attach rev 1.10/3.00 of it on snapshot.

I tried "cu -l /dev/cuaU[0..3]" to no avail, normally there would be
the raw output of the NMEA message stream; in particular on /dev/cuaU0.

What's that "no avail"? If the uplcom doesn't attach, it should error out with 'cu: open("/dev/cuaU0"): Device not configured'

You could try

tail -f /var/log/messages

and inspect what gets logged when you attach or detach different devices in different USB ports.
