On machines I've used with IPMI, there's a setup menu that lets you assign various com port devices to either IPMI serial-over-lan (which you can access with 'ipmitool sol', conserver in IPMI mode, or some other tools) or the physical connector. If you post dmesg and more info about the machine somebody might have more concrete information. -- Please keep replies on the mailing list.
