Hello, I was mistaken about /dev/random blocking, thanks for the corrections.
It turns out I had followed the i2pd docs a bit too closely and copied their documentation for the /etc/login.conf which had i2pd:\ ... instead of i2p:\ ..., which I forgot to change. That's what I get trying to fix this late at night. Setting openfiles-cur=16000 and openfiles-max=16000 in login.conf has fixed the issue. It was in fact because of my open file limit being to small.
