Following the instructions at www.openbsdsupport.org/obsd_desktop I'm able to get xdm up at startup (nice little Puffy icon and Welcome screen) but there does not appear to be a way to get to choose what session to start.
With xdm, try ~/.xsession instead of ~/.xinitrc. Don't know about kdm. ? Alexander
