Thanks to all who have responded. I've got things working now. In the machine's BIOS, I disabled plug&play and the parallel/serial ports. This didn't help. However I got the install working by interrupting the boot from CD and then doing: >> OpenBSD/i386 BOOT 2.10 boot> boot -c ... UKC> disable pcmcia UKC> exit Installation worked perfectly. After installation I modified /bsd with: cp -p /bsd /bsd-0 config -e -u -o /bsd /bsd (Actually I'm not sure that was the exact config command). The machine now boots on it's own with no problems. I generated a default /etc/X11/xorg.conf file with `Xorg -configure'. This worked fine apart from having an invisible pointer; I fixed this by uncommenting the `Option SWcursor' line in the generated /etc/X11/xorg.conf. The only minor problem I'm having now is that my USB wireless optical microsoft mouse does not work. It is detected and listed by usbdevs, but has no effect on the pointer. The machine's built-in trackpad works, as does a wired optical microsoft mouse. I haven't tried things like apm or floppy/cdrom devices.
