Unfortunately, they permitted catchall accounts per domain, so there
were only about 8000 unix accounts.

Not having a list of valid recipients per domain is a very bad idea,
and they suffered for it in terms of spam processing for invalid
addresses. Support wasted time explaining to customers what spamm is
and why they were getting mail to "unlisted" email addresses.

They started 10 years ago, and carried on business as if the Internet
hadn't changed.
