I recently tried to upgrade my machine to 4.1 with the normal
procedure from the official 4.1 CDs. Everything went well up to the
point where it extracts the packages. It copied the new kernel fine
but stalled while at 99% of base41.tgz. The ETA field read "- stalled
-" and nothing happened for a while until I pressed ctrl-c to retry.

I went back to the beginning and tried to upgrade again. The kernel
printed some messages about being out of space on /. I escaped to a
shell to see it had filled / and replicated some of the directories
from my 4.0 installation to the ramdisk. (I know some dirs are in the
ramdisk like /etc, but there was a new dir called /public that belongs
to my installation).

I rebooted two times from the CD to try again but I got the same error
as the first time. After that, I tried to copy the tgz files, the new
kernel and the ramdrive kernel to the hard drive and install from
there but still got the same problem.

Finally, I gave up a re-extracted base40.tgz to get a working system
back but I am still puzzled by what went wrong.

There must be something wrong with my hardware or setup because 4.1
was released a bit more than a month ago and nothing of the sort was
reported on the list. If anybody has an idea of where to investigate,
I would appreciate.

For those who need it here is a dmesg of the 4.0 kernel (with some
stable patches applied):
