they use a single-chip 5-port switch like RTL8305SC.

they used to be all over ebay sold as quad ethernet cards, but I can't
seem to find them there any more.

I'm not sure, it might be necessary to port freebsd's rlswitch mii
driver to make them work though.

the chip also supports vlans (configured by programming the eeprom
and soft-resetting as per http://realtek.info/pdf/rtl8305sc.pdf).
