Hi,

I have just updated from 4.3 to 4.4 on one of my boxes. All has gone
well except for the network device not being left up and running after
the machine has been booted.

The machine is running dhclient with the hostname file just containing
dhcp NONE NONE NONE. During the boot I see messages showing the link
going from up to down followed by down to up, as well as a few dhcp
requests followed by an ack.

ifconfig after a boot shows:

lo0: flags=8049<UP,LOOPBACK,RUNNING,MULTICAST> mtu 33204
          groups: lo
          inet 127.0.0.1 netmask 0xff000000
          inet6 ::1 prefixlen 128
          inet6 fe80::1%lo0 prefixlen 64 scopeid 0x3
vge0: flags=8843<UP,BROADCAST,RUNNING,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> mtu 1500
          lladdr 00:40:63:e6:d1:ee
          groups: egress
          media: Ethernet autoselect (none)
          status: no carrier
          inet6 fe80::240:63ff:fee6:d1ee%vge0 prefixlen 64 scopeid 0x1
          inet 192.168.67.40 netmask 0xffffff00 broadcast 192.168.67.255
enc0: flags=0<> mtu 1536

So vge0 appears to be up but no signal is detected on the cable. Weird.
So I do the ifconfig down/up shuffle to see what happens. As soon
as (or very soon afterwards) the down is done ifconfig shows the following:

vge0: flags=8802<BROADCAST,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> mtu 1500
          lladdr 00:40:63:e6:d1:ee
          groups: egress
          media: Ethernet autoselect (100baseTX full-duplex)
          status: active
          inet6 fe80::240:63ff:fee6:d1ee%vge0 prefixlen 64 scopeid 0x1
          inet 192.168.67.40 netmask 0xffffff00 broadcast 192.168.67.255

So, the device is down but now the line status is active. Do ifconfig
up and then everything is happy and network access happens.

If I change the hostname file to "dhcp media 100baseTX mediaopt full-duplex" then the interface stays up on boot. So perhaps this is just an issue with autoselect for this device.

Anyhoo, here is the dmesg:
