Sorry, perhaps I should have been more clear; I didn't mean to suggest
pf was specially optimized for Opterons, at all. I recalled seeing a
pf performance comparison of comparable Opteron and Xeon hardware
where the Opterons delivered a substantially better forwarding rate;
the reviewers attributed this (plausibly, I thought) to the lower
memory latency of the Opteron systems. However, I don't seem to be
able to find a reference to that report, and if that doesn't match
people's practical experience, well, it makes hardware selection
easier.
