The BIOS doesn't appear to give you such fine-grained control over which USB ports are enabled/disabled. Using the UKC (which I didn't know about) to disable uhci has allowed me to boot the kernel for installation and then the installed kernel. I'm still setting the system up, so don't know if I have enough USB stuff working for the system to be usable (the keyboard works; haven't gotten to X and the mouse yet). I will report when I'm done.
