I had this same issue in the near past.  I asked the same question
online.  I was using i386, and for me, any attempt to get a VM above
724MB would cause it to crash...

Short answer: you'll have to use amd64 if you want to try more RAM on
your VM.  In the end, more RAM didn't make a difference (for me).
Windows 7 is a tad faster than XP, but it all bogs down after a while.
