1. GNOME is actually slow on its own.
2. Try to find a source of GNOME running slower then always. What
processes do You run before running GNOME? How do You start it?

Xorg consumes many resources on amy platform in any case. Unless it
consumes much more then even, You shouldn't worry about that.
