First, why do you not think you have an AR5424 chipset? I ask because
you've said so elsewhere.

Second, I wonder if you have that card marked as 'up after the
recompile. I have the same card and when I have it marked as 'down'
there is no problem. In fact, I wonder if compiling the kernal has
anything to do with it, because I've done that too with no "unable to
reset hardware" mesage. that message only occurs when I  mark the card
'up' and try to use it.

So, to "fix" the issue (if it is what I think it is), mark your card
as 'down' (i.e., ifconfig ath0 down). It's not supported (yet),
anyway.
