I think your best bet would be to create a couple of test datasets with MapInfo and then open the .mdb files (in Access) to analyze their structure. It may just be something very simple that you're missing, maybe the access table needs to contain an ID field for instance. I never played with TAB files with access tables so I can't help, but based on what I've seen with other types (the .DAT and the .DBF cases), the link should be very straightforward.
