We have been doing some tests on generating large TAB files
(OpenStreetMap for Germany) and how to reach an optimized spatial index.
3 runs were executed, first one done without MITAB, just writing to MIF
and then using MapInfo 11.5.2 for the import process.
MapInfo has been used for packing graphic in all tests. This is
essentially what guarantees an optimal and balanced spatial index.
1) MIF
Generate: 1 min
Import: 28 min (591 MB MAP file)
Pack graphic: 1 min (383 MB MAP file)
Total: 30 min
2) TAB-optimized (modified 1.7.0 build, m_bQuickSpatialIndexMode = false)
Generate: 61 min (670 MB MAP file)
Pack graphic: 1 min (383 MB MAP file)
Total: 62 min
3) TAB-unoptimized (1.7.0 build, m_bQuickSpatialIndexMode = true)
Generate: 7 min (443 MB MAP file)
Pack graphic: 69 min (402 MB MAP file)
Pack graphic: 1 min (393 MB MAP file)
Pack graphic: 1 min (391 MB MAP file)
Total: 78 min
Conclusion is: If you have access to MapInfo and want to create large
tables with an efficient spatial index, it is faster to skip MITAB and
use MIF + import.
I hope the information may be usefull to others.
