Dear Tom,

unfortunately I'm not too proficient with the combination of Linux and OpenCV, but I will do my best to clarify. The basic problem is that most codecs are neither open nor free and as such are not inherently supported by linux. Currently, we use OpenCV mostly for device input, for which it works fine. If you plan on doing further video editing and/or conversion I would suggest the installation of an unstripped FFMPEG library (which contains MPEG Codecs). There seem to be some issues for Ubuntu though, that arise exactly from these legal reasons (see here: http://opencv.willowgarage.com/wiki/FFMPEG). Using the information on these pages, you should be able to get the integration running.

Regards,

Keno März

Hi guys

I was wondering as I want to process avi files in Ubuntu 11.10 32-bit . Do I need the FFMPEG add-on to OpenCV. As there seems to be a error (same one as talked about here www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/msg02439.html ). I remember in the old build instruction ( http://www.mitk.org/wiki/Build_requirements ) it was said that FFMPEG wad needed.

Is this still the case or should OpenCV be find without FFMPEG for what i need (avi processing)?

regards and thanks for the help
Tom
