This seems like a good compromise. We also use a RHEL6 derivative (as many
people do who need long support cycles).
If we really had to use a newer version of gcc than 4.4, this is now pretty
easy from a technical standpoint on RHEL using Red Hat's new Software
Collections feature. Installing devtoolset-2.1 will give you a modern
toolchain including gcc 4.8 - installed in parallel with the default gcc
4.4. You just have to remember to switch to it with `scl_enable
devtoolset-2.1 ...`. The problem for us would be the validation...
