Hi Nil,

this is an interesting question indeed. macOS (Mojave and Catalina) is tier 2
instead of tier 1 as we are not actively using it internally on a daily basis
except that it is part of our CI clients (Mojave). Our current policy is to
always support the latest two versions of macOS but we did not yet look into
Big Sur. We try to continue this support model but Apple is giving us
increasingly hard times with new macOS versions so the transition phases take
more time. We also learned by experience that it saves us a lot of trouble to
wait a few months before even looking into new macOS releases as they tend to
be still rather buggy then. We cannot promise anything yet regarding future
macOS support, as the probably biggest part of the equation is third-party
dependencies and their migration to new macOS releases. For example, if VTK
does not come up with a solution regarding Metal as soon as OpenGL is
completely thrown out of the window by Apple, I do not see how it is even
possible for us to continue supporting new macOS versions. I believe Kitware is
already working on a Vulkan backend, though (there is a compatibility layer for
Metal).

Best,

Stefan

Betreff: [mitk-users] macOS support

Hi all,

macOS was already a Tier 2 platform in MITK 2018.04, so we've been wondering
what your future plans are about macOS support. With OpenGL deprecation,
adoption of Metal and the move to ARM processors, macOS is now a really
different beast. The nightly documentation says that macOS will still be a Tier
2 platform, but what about Big Sur?
