Subject: [Mixxx-devel] First post and questions about translations
Hello.
I discovered Mixxx recently (this summer) and I liked it a lot. I am not a DJ,
but my brother worked as such when he was younger, and I am familiar with
Mixers, amplifiers, vinyls and I even used briefly the old BPM Studio version
2.0 (The one that looked like Winamp).
Said that, I decided to contribute to it, and I found the tranlations to be the
perfect starting point to do so. (I work as a Java coder and I am familiar with
C++, but mostly with Microsoft's MFC, and not too much with QT).
-----------------------
So now that I'm done with the presentation, here's what I would like to ask:
I've been following the beta release of 1.12, testing new builds and, as I've
said, updating the translation to my native tongue, which is Catalan.
So far, none of the new builds of the application have updated the tranlation
files (qm files), which date from july.
* My first question is, Who is responsible of regenerating them?
Should the automated builds be generating them automatically (calling lrelease
on each ts file), or what else?
* Next question is, Who is responsible of fetching updated ts files into GIT?
Obviously, it will be worthless to have an automatic regeneration of qm files
if the ts files are always the same ones. These can be obtained one by one
using the website, but I've read there are tools to do so in an automated way.
You can find some information here, although I don't know if this fits the goal
properly or not (Scroll down to synchronizing git with transifex):
https://www.transifex.com/blog/2015/how-to-use-git-to-track-changes-in-translation-files/
* This also prompts the next question. Is any relevant developer following the
issues reported in transifex? (
https://www.transifex.com/mixxx-dj-software/mixxxdj/translate/#ca/$?issue=yes
). Ok, probably there's nothing serious right now anyway.
* And last question related to translations of the application is, Who is
responsible of pushing changes of the english translations into transifex, so
that translators can translate them onto their language?
There aren't any big changes to the sentences, but there have been some new
ones over these months that are not present in transifex for tranlation. As an
example, the sentence under preferences, controllers that starts with "Mixxx
uses 'presets' to connect...". This sentence is different than the one in
transifex.
Btw, on a side note, it seems that the text "File" from the Main menu is not
translated in any language. Is this a bug in the application, or a problem with
Qt?
-------------------------
Now, onto the second part of the questions. Also translations, but now, the
manual.
It's a really nice manual, quite complete and detailed. I've leaned more and
more about Mixxx each chapter I've translated. (It even prompted me to change
some translations I did on the application, to better reflect the intended
meaning).
But other than that, "Manual", and "translations" are two things that, up to
now, don't play well.
I posted at the forums some problems and solutions I found when trying to build
it on my language: http://mixxx.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=7586 . I am
unsure if what I wrote there is the only corrrect solution but it is the one
that worked for me.
I posted there that the instructions on the Readme.md file on Git should be
updated to correct these, things, and I was told to update it myself if I
could. Well, i'm still learning to use Git properly (I am used to SVN and some
things about Git confuse me).
* So, can anyone update it meanwhile, or at least verify if this is the
expected way to do so? Note that I've only tried to build the html version of
it, not the PDF.
* On a recent post in the boards, I've seen that you've just setup an automatic
build of the manual, in english, prompted by the requirement of having an
updated PDF for distribution. Well, this process is "english only" so far. Is
it reasonable to ask to build for all translations? (more than 10% translated
if you want, or if that is even possible to calculate from the commandline).
* Probably, a question for a later date is How will this affect the
distribution of the application, and how to show it to the final users?
(Implications on the installer and/or help menu, implications on the website's
version).
* Just like with the translations of the application, there is also the
question of who is responsible of generating the pdf
* And who is responsible of fetching updated translations from transifex ( I am
unsure if we save this on Git now, so this prompts for organization as well)
* And who is responsible of pushing the changes of the english version to
transifex? (There have been some changes recently in Git, which will probably
replace existing translations. So maybe we have to take a look at the
implications of this before doing it, but do it sooner than later )
* There are also some issues
https://www.transifex.com/mixxx-dj-software/mixxxdj-manual/translate/#issues
At last, I am unsure of the implications of moving from version 1.12 to 2.0.
More so if creating the new version in transifex leaves the translated text
behind. I am at 77% of translating it so far and definitely it has taken much
time.
That's all for now.
Hope you can reply to those questions, as it feels a bit strange that
translating the application is easy, but to see the translation, one nearly has
to be part of the development team.
