OK.  Since VLC can play the stream (even the -q 8 stream) without problems, it 
seems that it may be down to some incompatibility in the way xine sees the 
streams - or that's how it looks to me.

I think my time will be best spent over the next day or two in rebuilding the 
parts that make up the stream, this time making them interlaced.

Thanks for the explanation and for all the help you have given.  I'll let you 
know how the interlaced stream works out.
