        It's not the encoder ;)   I've lost count of the number of VCDs/SVCDs/
        DVDs I've made and never had a 'pause' problem.

        Sounds like dropped frames (unsteady source signal), a player that is
        having trouble reliable reading the media or even a media problem.
        How are you doing the conversion from analog to digital?  What are you 
        using to play back the VCDs.  Which version of mjpegtools are you
        using (cvs version or the old 1.6.2 release)?  What options are being
        used to do the encoding?  

        If you get the feeling that we're asking for more information - you're
        right :)

        Not sure if there's a way to smooth it out if the cause is frame 
        drops or other issues.  The encoder doesn't introduce pauses - it is 
        only processing what it's given...
