        That cleared up the problem for me.  But then a little later on I
        moved up to capturing uncompressed with an external TBC, etc.

        Of course - it's "night vs. day" (or rather it was for me - not that
        my eyeballs are golden, but the difference was plain even to me ;)). 

        I refuse to use composite video cabling.  Ever.

        The 3D Y/C capability of the ADVC-300 is only for those who won't
        get a S-VHS deck and use a Y/C (S-Video) cable.  It's much better
        to avoid mangling the Y and C signals together in the first place than
        it is to undo the damage after the fact (it's a lossy process and 
        recovery isn't 100%).
