Or do I need to let lavrec grabbing and start a second process for
converting?
It's the simplest way, really.

O.k. I have tried several options. My favorite one is to start lavrec
every minute to record one frame, and afterwards start lavtrans to get a
jpg. The problem here is that lavrec doesn't exit after the task is
done (even when I give the option -t 1). This causes weird system behavior.
I tried it with: lavrec -f a -i p -d 2 -a 0 -S -t 1 test.avi
Is there a way to exit lavrec after a task is done? Or do I need to add
a kill command to cron.

Perhaps you can run xawtv and use xawtv-remote to do periodic snap commands.
That was my first try. Xawtv uses v4l(2) for recording and I have some
memory issues (limited memory). Because lavrec uses hardware encoding
this is my preferred way.
Thanks for the response, I am almost there. Any suggestion is welcome!!!
