My car is an '87 GTI 16 valve. One of the 3 v-belts snapped the other
night...the one in the middle (the one that appears to allow the motor to
turn the alternator and is it the air conditioning?). A buddy of mine
replaced it for me....as it turned out to be a pain to even get to it.
After replacing it started and idled fine...idled for like 20 minutes, with
periodic reving with no problems. However, after driving it about 3 minutes,
the new belt started squealing like a pig and smoking, and then snapped
again. Now, it looked like it was tight enough. Could this just be that it
was too tight/not tight enough....or have I probably got a bad bearing in a
pulley somewhere? Is this something a mechanic who is not a VW specialist
could handle diagnosing?

Ugh,
Adam
