You guys know that I'm always saying that cold start problems on 1.8 16V's 
are almost always caused by a bad thermotime switch (on the side of the head).
Well, here's an easy way to see if it's working correctly:

The thermotime switch is what gives the signal for the cold start valve to 
open.  In the morning, if your car cranks, and cranks, but won't fire up, 
simply disconnect the wire to the cold start valve.  If the car then starts, 
then your thermo time switch is bad.  The switch can go bad in two ways:  It 
can stay "open" which will cause the cold start valve to keep spraying fuel, 
and will flood the motor, and prevent the car from starting, or it can stay 
"closed" and not do anything, which will just mean a tiny bit of rough 
running during the first 2-3 minutes of driving.
