Re: Poor MPG on a 1990 2.0L 16v
Unless you've got an aftermarket chip, I suggest trying a tank
of 89-octane midgrade. I know, I know...but seriously, when
I did it with my Jetta the MPG went up noticeably. I get about
30mpg on the highway now, whereas I used to get about 26
using 92-octane. I'm not sure why this happens, but it's true!

Higher Ocatne gas is designed to eliminate "pinging".
It does this by "slowing down" the flame front.
It actually burns worse than lower octane gas.
However, if the ignition is advanced to take
advantage of the reduced pinging - well then the higher octane
allows more power by increased ignition timing.
The ads that suggest running "premium gas" are
really designed to sell the more expensive
(and probably higher profit margin) gas.

However - not being familar with the "knock sense"
ignitions, Im not sure how far back the timing is pulled
when pinging is sensed. Thus I dont know if bumping the
timing up and running "marginal" gas is an advantage
or not...
