I recall reading on I believe the Quattro list that at most a turbo will add
something like a 2 psi increase in back pressure. 2 psi is really a drop in
the bucket depending on how restrictive the rest of the system is. Turbos
are essentially using no power generated by the motor. The energy that they
do use is what is wasted as heat energy already produced by the engine to
spin the turbine.
With a supercharger you do run the risks of detonation because of the
boost pressure and the fact that superchargers also produce heat due to the
ideal gas law PV=mRT Pressure * Volume= Mass*gas constant* Temperature. If
the pressure and volume (which is what your after) goes up so will the mass
and Temp. Superchargers are not by any means linear they tend to loose boost
pressure as the superchargers revs go up. I have seen supercharger systems
that can rob as much as 75 HP by 5k rpm.
Super charger are very easy to install. You should always wait until the
engine is warmed before getting into it for durability sake. Turbos added
heat is due to the fact they are part of the exhaust system that adds heat to
the compressed air. But that is easily taken care of by any good
intercooler. With a turbo you can shape the torque and horsepower curve any
way you wish. An excellent example is the Audi 1.8 t the motor due to the
turbo develops Max torque by 1750 rpm and hold it until something like 4k
rpm. with a supercharge the torque and HP curve is determined by the impeller
designer.
I am a bit jaded by Turbos. I personally think they are the better way
to go just due to the ease of tuning. I think that all of the other hassles
of a turbo are out weighted by the ease of tuning.
