My '92 never had one. When I bought it (from a VW dealer, back in Sept. '94), the front badge was already goners... When I had some work done on the body/paint, the rear badge needed to be replaced, but I had my body guy just hand it to me, and it now sits on the bookshelf in the living room :-), and the GTI is now badge-less!
