It's an aerodynamic thing.  As the car moves through the air, it in effect
punches a "hole" in the atmosphere, leaving a slight vacuum directly behind
the vehicle.  This is why all the dirt gets on the rear windows of hatch
backs, station wagons, and SUV's.  The same phenomenon will draw exhaust
gases into the car if you have leaky seals, or drive your SUV with the rear
window down...
