This sure sounds familiar!! Sorry to hear about that.
As you probably discovered from my tale of woe, it could very likely be a
broken wire somewhere and really hard to diagnose.
To check the pressure regulator I'd think you'd need a fuel pressure gauge
and put it before and after the pressure regulator, check the pressure on
both sides. This is a routine test they will do at any competent shop, and
you can probably take it in for check-out for less than the cost of the
tools to check it yourself.
That was my argument anyway!
