I had a similar problem this summer which I cured by replacing an ailing spark plug wire (one was visibly dead, but I replaced them all with ND's wire set). YMMV, but I'd give your ignition system a thorough check/cleaning. When I first got my car, the hall sender was loose and caused random sputtering... you might want to check that as well.
