No way you can hear transfer pump, you can only test it when you pull it out, drop it in bucket of fuel and give it a try. But if you hear loud buzzing (like you sit in car, engine working and you easily hear it) then yes, it might be starving for fuel because of dead transfer pump! And car runs bad then!
As far as I recall Pierburgs were very reccommended on the list. So check that it receiving +12 and has good ground in first. The reality is that BOSCH does not make Transfer Pumps at all, they dont have BOSCH part number, only VW. In case you have your old Transfer Pump still around, I can help you with instructions how to recover it, for test purposes.
