OK, guys, here's my new problem: '91 Jetta 2.0L 16V w/Motronic. The temp
gauge usually doesn't move past 1/4, it seems to be normal operating temp. I
can get scorching heat out of the vents with the needle right there.
However, when in traffic, the needle will rise rather quickly (takes about 10
minutes to get to 3/4 in stop and go). This became quite obvious the other
day when I got stuck in the damn snow, and I was sitting there revving the
shit out of it to try and break through the snow to some pavement(it worked,
too). The car overheated(I think...the coolant light started blinking), and
the oil temp was up to 290. This was after about 2 minutes stuck in the
snow. What the hell is wrong with this thing? Is this another thermostat
problem?
Sounds to me like the cooling fan is not operating - more than likely
you have either a bad temperature switch or cruddy connections
between the switch and the fan.
