Well, it only gets better from here, I suppose. I called Aluminum Head Rebuilders today to check on price and availability of a 1.8L head. According to "Chuck", the following services are performed to the head when they rebuild it:
Bead blasted oil galleys steam cleaned new guides installed new valves installed where necessary new springs where necessary valve grind and leak check The head comes without cams and lifters, or with reground cams and new lifters for an extra $200. I am going to go without and get the head for $350. Shipping from Oregon to Virginia is $50(UPS 3-Day). And I have decided to turn the rest of the work over to one of the guys at work. Yeah, I know it's the dealership, but this guy has been with the dealer for 30 years, I am providing all of the parts, I get a warranty, and it's only going to run me $380(labor) to finish it all off. Parts come to about $270 with the lifters. So I'll be coming in at just under $1000 for everything. And you know what? And you'll have to excuse me for this...I'll be damned if I ever buy another 16V. The next car is NOT going to have an interference engine. And that is the end of it. I can't afford this kinda stuff, and my luck with 16Vs is way too consistent to be anything but an omen. Now, where was that Volvo Turbo I saw in the paper for $1200... -Dave '91 GTX 16V _____________ List Sponsor: http://www.netsville.com To remove yourself from this list, send mail to [email protected] with 'unsubscribe a2_16v' in the body of your message See us on the web at http://www.a2-16v.com Visit the 16V Homepage at http://www.gti16v.org
