Jay:

It appears that your wealth of experience surpasses mine, but none of my A2s 
have ever "clunked".  I've installed two aftermarket suspensions (both with VR6 
strut bearings, FWIW) on two different A2s and never had this problem.  You 
know your stuff, so I don't know how to account for this, but I did want to 
state that our experiences differ.

        Just as an FYI every Audi, Porsche and VW I have owned has done the same
        thing, I just change the bearings every year and dont worry about it :)

        shouldered nut that holds down the spring hat was too loose.  On the
