Last night I went to my local fabic shop to pick up
some headliner material. Well, all they really had
was lots and lots of plain fabric, nothing felt or
even cloth with a thin foam backing like I had hoped.
Then I saw some vinyl, which wouldn't cut it because
it was pretty heavy and would eventually sag. I
noticed a role of black pleather (plastic leather).
Very very nice grain, feels nearly like real leather.
And its lightweight, seems very durable, and stretches
quite a bit. It was $8.97 a yard (52" wide), so I
picked up two yards. Perfect size. I took the
headliner out last night, pulled off the old fabric,
taped up the cracks with duct tape and laid the
pleather over the shell. On each side, I expect to
have at least 3 inches of extra material after it is
glued down and in place. The only pain now is
deciding what glue to use. 3M has their headliner
adhesive, but I think something like 3M trim spray
might be a better bet. The headliner adhesive is made
to adhere the shell and foam together. Well, now I am
adhering the shell and plastic-like backing (of the
pleather fabric). I could probably even get away with
super 77. I will post some pictures on my website
once I get everything back together and in the car.
