Problem solved guys, but I'll share the solution. It may be useful to
others who purchase cars that have already been modified by previous owners.
My '86 GTI hybrid is a bit of a frankenstein car, but it has the original
steering column in it. According to MOMO hub adapter guru Holland Phillips,
the apropriate hub adapter model number is 8010 for all pre-1988, and some
mid-1989 cars. This is the hub adapter I have, and should have been the
proper one to use, but it would not fit on my steering column because the PO
had fixed a spline adapter so he could run a Nardi/Nothelle wheel. I just
need to cut or pull off the spline adapter, and I'll be in business.
Apparently, MOMO hub adapters are designed to work with the factory steering
column, but other aftermarket wheels require a spline adapter.
