I was in the process of buying a 91 Audi 100 about a year ago.  154 some k.  
The alternator went and was a mint.  I didnt buy the car because it had 
really low compression.  If you took the oil cap off while the engine was 
running it shut down.  Later I talked to an Audi guy and he said that if you 
do that to 10 100's of the similiar year and milage 6 of them will do the 
same thing.  I didnt like the sound of that, but he said it wasnt a problem 
and was common.  I ended up not buying the car because of that.  Was selling 
for 2250 but dropped it down to 1995.  I dunno if this helps at all but those 
were the problems I ran into.
