hey, ok, I will try to make this as short as possible, last week I am driving home and get on the car, reach redline (about 7,200rpm) and the light on the dash for the alternator/battery comes on. get home and check the voltage volts, replace the regulator, light goes out but still only 12.4V, replace the alternator everything is fine until yesterday when I hit 7,200rpm again. this time no light comes on and I did not think about it until the car dies later in the day. check voltage and it is 12.5V return the alternator to the store and they test it and the guy says it is only putting out 2amps, get another one, put it in, check voltage and it is 14.4V, look inside the car and the alternator light is on! I turn on the a/c and high beams and at idle it is still at 14.2V, this is tested at the alternator. at the battery it is about .2V less. I also replaced the ground wire going from the battery to the engine. the car seems to be running fine but the light is on. my question is could there be something wrong with the alternator or would it be something in the car? anyone know what goes bad inside an alternator when you spin it too fast? it should be able to handle the engine speed without any problems.
any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks Mike Guidotti 88 GTI 16V 87 5KTQ _____________ List Sponsor: http://www.netsville.com To remove yourself from this list, send mail to [email protected] with 'unsubscribe a2_16v' in the body of your message See us on the web at http://www.a2-16v.com Visit the 16V Homepage at http://www.gti16v.org
