[a2-16v-list] steering spline adapter sleeve on an A2

Does any body know what it takes to install the spline adapter sleeve 
to convert an A2 from the small course threaded steering spline to 
the larger diameter finely toothed spline?

I have the part but it doens't want to seat. Is there a cap behind 
the small spline that's installed that I have to remove? Can this be 
done without yanking the column out?
