If the head is correctly repaired then it should be better than it was
stock. Helicoils are an ok fix, but a better way to fix it is thread
inserts. It's basically like a huge helicoil, only stronger. Instead of
going to the next largest bolt size you have to go up a few sizes, as the
insert is much thicker. Just like a helicoil you thread the insert in, and
then put the bolt into that.

I have a couple of cam cap bolts that are getting ready to let loose in the
head I have in my car now.. they only held about 8 ft/lbs the last time I
put some cams in. I think if I was to do another cam swap on the car they
would pull out completely.. so when I rebuild my head I'm basically going to
put in these inserts for all 16 of the cam cap bolts. EZ-lok makes some of
these inserts... hell, they even have models that you use to repair stripped
head bolts in aircooled VW heads: http://www.ezlok.com/auto.htm

I say go for it. Have the RIGHT kind of inserts put in, and then have the
cam journals align-bored just to be 100% sure. The head should be perfectly
fine. Even if you don't want to use inserts, welding and re-tapping the head
would also be just fine. Hell, you probably wouldn't even have to mill the
head any since you're not heating the side that will be mating to the block!

P.S., Josh- I think you're the one with more money than common sense.
Buying a whole new ported head just because of some stripped bolt holes is
pretty foolish when the fix would cost around $100.
