If you end up doing it yourself (yes it sucks, but it's doable), I'd recommend putting adhesive foil on the flaps for the heater box vents.

My 89 GLI started to not heat very well. Air wasn't getting up to the vents. The summer previous to that I was wondering where all these little foam pieces were coming from. The OEM material is a thin foam that goes over the swiss cheese plate that directs the air in the heater box when you slide the vent selector on the climate control. After 14-15 years the foam has pretty much kissed the wind.

Replacing it with adhesive foil (on both sides) did the trick.

I will be calling the dealer in the am to see what they say.

You know for years I have been thinking that I should check on this recall. Now its too late. All you out there who still have
dry boots, check for your recall and get it done.

thanks guys,

Yes, A friends 91 GTi blew a heatercore last week and the dealer fixed it free of charge. But not without the expected denial and complaining. It is a Safety recall issued by the department of transportation. They have to honor it. Check www.alldata.com to see
if your car is within the years covered.
Talk to the dealer with the specific recall notice and numbers. Then call VWoA to verify.

Larry,
Check with VW to see if the heater core was covered by the recall.
If its not, then get ready to take out the dash. It won't be a fun job.

Mark.
