Jim,
Typically until the new rings break in a little, they will allow a little
oil to enter the combustion chamber (which then heads out the tailpipe w/
the combustion gasses). I doubt however that 1 new ring set with a bit more
blow-by is going to cause THAT much oil consumption. You have a problem
somewhere, likely valve seals and/or the other 3 cylinders which are running
on the original rings. Of course there are other possibilities, head gasket
etc. If your looking for opinions, I'd say don't bother pissing away 1qt
of Mobil-1 every 1k miles unless you find/repair the problem. Use an
inexpensive dino oil, get yourself to 200k and do a proper rebuild at that
time. Many cars go 200k and never see a synthetic. I had a Subaru that went
275k before I sold it and it never saw anything better than $1/qt dino oil
and fram filters every 3-4k miles. Just my $0.02.

Subject: [a2-16v-list] Oil Loss and Cost Replacement

I've been real good to my Gli with plenty of Mobil 1 and VW Oil Filters
since
I got the car in 1998. I recall losing about a quart (no external leaks)
every thousand miles or so. I recently had the rings replaced in one
cylinder and
a rebuilt head. I'm now losing a quart of oil more frequently. The
engine/car
has 167K miles on it and intend to take it to 200K. Based on the frequent
loss
and cost of a case of Mobil 1, would you folks still justify pouring a quart

of Mobil 1 in every two weeks? I was tinkering with the idea of going to a
cheaper synthetic blend. I'm glad I do not have this issue with the Corrado
and
the Redline Oil :)

Thanks,

Jim
