Matthew is correct: basically, the pressure plate only moves a tiny amount,
and typically the driven disk can still touch both it and the flywheel due
to clearances on the splines and small [and normal!] amount of out-of-plane
warping. That slight contact is sufficient to move wheels when they're in
the air, but causes the clutch assembly to slip when they're down.
However, neutral should allow the engine to run with brakes on & clutch
engaged; selecting any OTHER gear, and with clutch pedal pushed in, will
allow you to perform the test. I'd suggest a high-numbered gear, 4th or
5th: engine has least mechanical advantage, so if clutch doesn't disengage,
applying brakes ensures engine stall. HTH.
