There is probably a better way but this is how I do it.

With the car on level ground, I remove the drivers side front wheel. (Obviously 
you have to jack it up to get the tire off, but lower it while on the jackstand 
until the car is once again level following tire removal)

Behind the drivers side wheel, there is a large 17mm(?) hex plug on the tranny casing. Unscrew this large plug. If proper oil level is present, then oil should just drip out of this hole while the transmission is level. If it is not, then the level is low. You can use a funnel with a plastic tube to pour additional oil into this same hole, or as some have advised, remove the speedo cable on top of the tranny casing and pour in oil from there until oil flows from the hole in the side.
I'm sure others will have better suggestions.
